Assignment 1C

1. I read Katy and Lindsey's pages. Katy has an 8 year old daughter. Lindsey is working on her Bachelor's degree requirements and plans to transfer to Cal Poly.

2. I learned from Katy that Paulo Freire believed we can over come societal problems by learning, unity and organization. I learned from Lindsey that Freire believed in a dialog between student and teacher that emphasized the pupil's background knowledge, experiences, personal situations and environment.

3. These ideas deffinately relate to our study of humanities! By learning about the world and eachother, we will have more understanding and empathy for people in other cultures. This leads to unity among eachother and the world around us. The concept of dialog is what we are doing in our blogs. We will relate to the information we read and study, as well as eachother's blogs. We will most likely share our experiences, which will provide us with a deeper understanding of how despite all our differences in background and experiences, we have much in common.

Assignment 1B

Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator. While born to middle class parents in 1921, Freire soon developed an empathy with poor people through his experience in the Great Depression. He went to law college and studied philosophy (specifically phenomenology- the idea of how people consciously perceive/interpret events in human history are how they actually are) and psychology of language. He was admitted to the legal bar but never ended up practicing law. He later married a teacher named Elza Maria Costa de Oliveira and had five children with her.

Freire's educational philosophy was similar to that of Plato and Modern Marxists. One idea he is best know for is his attack on the "banking" concept of education, which states that students are basically "filled" or "deposited" with information by their teachers. Freire felt, along with past philosophers, that students should be actively learning instead of being filled with ideas. His work with this laid the way for critical pedagogy, which is an approach to teaching that encourages students to question the status qou and think critically. He didn't approve of the traditional student/teacher relationship, feeling that both student and teacher should learn from each other. This is referred to as democratic education.

Paulo
Freire tended to take a holistic approach with teaching and knowledge. He felt that before we read people's stories, we must understand the incredible range of things that were happening during that time period- what was going on in the world, how did it effect this person's views? He believed that research should be incorporated into everyone's life, and that accepting the truth of what is and what has come to pass is to generate real change in the world around us.

Assignment 1A

1. What is your first name only?
Rhianon

2. Why are you taking this class and what do you hope to learn?
I'm taking this class because I have an interest in the subject of humanities, and wanted to learn more. I hope to learn more about other people and cultures, because I feel it's necessary to learn about those you share the world with.

3. How far do you live from SRJC main campus?
9.6 miles

4. What do you think of when you think "California"? Does this differ from what non-Californians think and if so, how?
When I think of California, I think of the gold rush and agricultural developments that took place early in this state's history. I think of the diverse groups of people who came to California in hopes of different things. I don't really know what people from other parts of the country think about California, but I've heard stereotypes such as "it's always sunny" and that Californians are hippies and surfers. If this is truly how some people view California, then their view is based on misconceptions, while my view is more of a knowledgeable one.

5. Have you created a blog or webpage in the past?
No, this is the first.

6. Regarding computers, are you on a mac or a pc?
A pc.

7. What was your January 20th, 2009 like, or what do you remember of this day?
What I'll remember this day is the Inauguration!
